Shades State Park has narrow sandstone ravines and canyons similar to Turkey Run, but is less heavily visited. The name is a shortening of "Shades of Death", though opinions differ as to whether the original name was due to the dense canopy of the area or to the death of early settlers in the area at the hands of Indians.
