A common plant along waterways and other moist habitats at intermediate elevations, found nearly throughout the United States, but not in the southeastern coastal plain.

Plant habit in Rain Creek Canyon, Mogollon Mountains, Catron County, New Mexico, 7 Jul 2010. This plant was much smaller and less branched than is typical for Epilobium ciliatum, apparently dwarfed by the absence of soil.
