Mirabilis nyctaginea (Michx.) MacMill.

A species found throughout most of the United States, generally in disturbed habitats. The plants I have photographed appear to be cleistogamous, although as this species usually flowers at night it is difficult to be certain.

Involucres at Wagon Mound Cienega, Mora County, New Mexico, 7 Aug 2011. Within each involucre there are three flowers (apparently cleistogamous) or developing fruits.
