This species has a diploid and a triploid form. The diploid form is found from central Texas to northeastern Mexico. The triploid form occurs from central Mexico south to Argentina. These forms are not currently given any taxonomic status but are readily distinguishable morphologically. The diploid form is very similar to and may even be conspecific with Pellaea oaxacana.
